The key to maintaining your roof system's effectiveness is to make sure it stays completely intact. When roof tiles are missing, loose or torn off, the roof structure and indeed your whole home is vulnerable to water damage and rot. Roof tiles that border those that are missing are more vulnerable to being blown off, so it’s crucial that all missing or broken tiles are replaced as quickly as possible.
High winds, driving rain, snow and ice are the sworn enemies of roofing systems, so be watchful of attacks throughout the winter.
Of course properly fixed roof tiles should not blow off in normal winter storms. If your roof is over 50 years old then one missing tile could be a sign of further problems to come. Nails used to fix roof tiles may have rusted over the decades: if that is the case then it my be that your roof is nearing the end of its life.
When you call a roofing contractor in to sort out the immediate problem, ask them to do a full check of the roof condition and give you a report so that you are prepared for any more roofing repairs you may need to do.
If your home is in an area affected by very high winds, there may be a need for a stronger fixing than nails, for example clips or clips and nails. There is a British Standard that gives advice on the fixings that should be used on any building, and your Redland Select roofing contractor will be able to give you the right advice.
