Slate roofing tiles were originally most common in Wales where natural slate is a natural commodity that made for cheap, easily available roofing in the 18th and 19th century.
The characteristic smooth grey tiles spread quickly throughout the UK with the development of railways that made transportation easy. Slate did not remain cheap and natural slate tiles are now most likely to be found re-roofing buildings with particular architectural merit.
That doesn’t stop home builders (and buyers) liking the look of slate, of course, and modern manufactured products faithfully imitate the look of natural slate at a fraction of the cost.
Redland’s range includes two such tile designs: Cambrian is made of 60% recycled welsh slate while the Richmond tile is made entirely of concrete, but still maintains an authentic slate grey look.
Concrete products from the Redland range provide cost-effective equivalents for all roof tile materials: check out the Find the Right Tile section of the website to track down the right tiles for your roof.
