Getting the best feed-in tariff

The Feed-In Tariff (FIT) is the government incentive to encourage householders to install Solar panels on their roof.

The general principle is that you get an income for the electricity you generate from your Solar PV installation.  (See our section on Solar Power Roofs).

However, the whole Feed-In Tariff system is under review and the rules are likely to change next year.  We don’t know what the result of the review will be, but it is quite possible that the FIT will be reduced.

At the moment, the amount you earn for electricity is fixed for 25 years – and that 25 years runs from the point at which you have the panels fitted.  If you have Solar PV installed before the rules are changed then your payments are guaranteed for the whole 25 years.

The review will decide what these payments will be for future installations, and the rules are quite likely to change in April next year. So if you are thinking about installing Solar PV you might want to do it sooner rather than later.
